Metallica, fronted by James Hetfield, opened for Ozzy’s band during the Ultimate Sin tour.

PARENTAL ADVISORY

Less amusing developments were in store for Ozzy in 1986. One of his old songs, “Suicide Solution,” was in the news thanks to a trial in which the family of a youth named John McCollum, who had committed suicide while listening to the song, hired an organization called the Institute for Bio-Acoustics Research (IBAR) to assess its content. IBAR claimed to have located subliminal lyrics in the song, recorded 60 percent faster than the normal rate of speech and “audible enough that their meaning and true intent becomes clear after being listened to over and over again.” The lyrics were said to be, “Why try, why try? Get the gun and try it! Shoot, shoot, shoot,” followed by laughter. All of this was dismissed by the court, but it led to much press attention on the subject.
